I moved into a new lodge in my 200 level after I started earning some good money from tech.
The lodge was known as a “big boys’ lodge” — self-contained rooms, steady light, generator, water, and a new building.

I met many “big boys” and quickly became friends with most of my neighbours.
But one guy stood out. I heard about him before I even met him — and the stories were not good.

People spoke about him with irritation, describing him as a disturbance.
They said he always smelled, knocked on doors to charge his phone and lamp, and begged to do chores for a small fee.

That made me curious. How could someone afford to stay in a lodge where the rent was around ₦200,000, yet still do chores for neighbours to survive?

Out of curiosity, I asked the porter about him. As expected, the porter confirmed the stories.
He explained that the guy wasn’t living in a room — he had rented the store.

The space was so tiny that it couldn’t fit a student’s mattress.
There were no windows, no toilet, no ventilation, and no electricity.
It was so hot that no one could stay there for 20 minutes without sweating heavily. Because of this, he always left the door open, even at night.

When we finally met, we talked for a long time.
I asked for his name, and he said I should call him Mega 99, the name people called him on the street. He was very funny.

We became friends. He was always happy, full of positive energy, and he sang beautifully — a proud Celestial member.
I told him to come to my room anytime he needed to charge or needed help.

Not long after, he brought several phones to charge. I joked with him that he had “hammered” and bought two phones.
He laughed and told me one belonged to his roommate.

Roommate? In that tiny store?

He explained that the roommate was his childhood friend from their village in Osun.
The boy’s parents could only afford his pre-degree fees — no money for accommodation, food, or clothes.
So Mega 99 allowed him to stay in the store out of love.

I felt terrible.
There I was, with a full room and a sense of comfort.
There he was in a cramped cubicle — yet cheerful, generous, and always making people laugh.

I invited his friend over. If I thought Mega 99 was funny, his friend was even funnier.
That night, I cooked rice and beans with boiled eggs. We ate, played PES, and slept off in my room.
We became good friends, even though they were two years below me.

Our Saturday evenings at the viewing centre were always hilarious.
Both of them were Chelsea fans — loud and dramatic.

I left the lodge a year later, but I continued to invite them to my new place to watch matches.
We stayed close even after I graduated and left FUTA.

They eventually graduated and continued with their lives, while I focused on building startups.

A few years ago, things became extremely difficult for me financially.
Startups are tough and very expensive.
I had spent all my savings, sold my car, and sold many other things to keep my startup alive after a failed iPhone importation business.

Then one random afternoon, Mega 99 called.
I was happy to hear from him. We joked as usual.

At the end of the call, he said:
“Bro, thank you so much for those uni days. You really tried for me and my guy. I want to send you something to appreciate you.”

I thought it was a joke — until he wasn’t joking.

He asked for my account details.
A few seconds later, he called again and asked, “Bro, is this your domiciliary account?”

I was shocked. “Dom account? You wantto  send me dollars?”

I sent the account.

Seconds later… ALERT: $1,000 from Mega 99.

The same guy who could not afford accommodation.
The same guy who once lived in a store.
The same guy who used to beg to charge his phone.

That money came at the perfect time. I was completely broke.

I went straight to Captain Cook for a proper lunch, then to GTB to withdraw, and finally called my aboki to change it.
My confidence returned immediately. I felt alive — CEO mode activated.

Mega 99 is still one of the biggest supporters of my startup Parrot (@use_parrot).
He always likes and reposts our content and constantly shares ideas and feedback.

He doesn’t write reviews, but he has referred more than ten users to us.

Nobody succeeds alone.
Most “self-made” stories leave out the real details.
Friendship is a gift — a huge one.

I’ve enjoyed meaningful friendships and have also tried to be a blessing to people around me.

The number of times friends have shown up for me is too many to be a coincidence.
