There has been an ongoing debate about whether ministers of the gospel—whether in preaching or music, should charge for their ministrations. The truth is, no minister, whether full-time or part-time, should demand payment for their service to God. However, no church or ministry should invite ministers without honoring them financially. This is a serious issue that Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) parishes need to address.
Why do some parishes and program organizers feel it’s acceptable to invite a choir group and not even provide them with transportation support? These choir members contribute money among themselves, rent a bus, and travel long distances just to minister. And after all their effort, they don’t even receive transport fare? That’s unfair. Some churches even provide food during programs, but exclude the choir. Isn’t that sheer disregard?
A sister once shared how her relationship with a friend was ruined over this issue. She was asked to invite a Pentecostal choir for a praise concert, and after making the necessary arrangements, she approached the Shepherd for logistics. His response? “Is it not the work of God?” The choir was traveling from Lagos to Ondo, and the cost was minimal, yet the church refused to cover it. She had no choice but to cancel the arrangement.
Imagine a 15-man choir, 20-man choir, or even 25 people traveling for a program. The cost of renting a bus could range from ₦40,000 to ₦50,000 or more, depending on location. Yet, after all that effort, they receive nothing but a “thank you” and a forced smile? Meanwhile, guest artists and celebrity ministers invited to the same program are paid ₦700,000 to ₦1,000,000 or more. Isn’t that outright wickedness?
Many choir groups rely on personal contributions or sponsorships. However, any church that invites them should at least provide financial support to ease the burden of transportation and other costs. This also applies to drama groups and other ministers.
Some Shepherds have a habit of sidelining choir members once they find another vocalist they prefer. This often leads to conflict and unnecessary misunderstandings among ministers. If you ever find yourself in such a situation, go where you are celebrated, not where you are neglected. At the end of the day, God’s grace will never leave those He has called to work for Him. Stay faithful, and He will always provide.
