Many people believe that the size or location of a parish is what determines its importance. But that’s not the real measure.
Take, for example, the dream of Celestial University, a vision passionately nurtured by the erudite Prof. Bola Akinterinwa and others. That noble project was sadly abandoned — ‘killed’ by some elders of the church who allowed selfish interests to take priority over the church’s future.
Instead of arguing endlessly about “cathedral” titles, we should be thinking about projects that would leave a lasting legacy for generations to come. Unfortunately, some in leadership have traded monumental progress for personal ambitions.
Our image problem has also kept many high-profile professionals — including football celebrities — from openly associating with our church. Many of them now choose to share their testimonies in Pentecostal churches. Sadly, some prophets and shepherds have given more attention to financial gain than to saving souls.
I deeply respect the late Baba David Adeniyi and Olu Oshodi, whose exemplary leadership in the 1980s drew the celebrated boxer Obisia Nwankpa to worship at Ayilara Parish. They proved that true leadership can win hearts for Christ.
Today, however, it seems the focus has shifted. We are quick to welcome the dollars of successful people, yet slow to guide them toward salvation. I recently listened to footballer Rasheedat Ajibade’s testimony at MFM and felt deep sadness for our church.
It’s time to think beyond appearances and work toward restoring the church’s integrity and mission.
