The practice of anointment in the Celestial Church has evolved over time, leading to changes that some members view as excessive. Traditionally, there was nothing like “iwuye,” in Celestial Church known today as investiture.
In earlier times, the church emphasized a simpler and more solemn approach. Members would receive their anointment, then sew their new regalia, and head to church to offer thanksgiving.
As it is done in the Celestial Church of old, the regalia was worn directly after anointment at the same place the anointing was received, signifying a direct and immediate transition into a state of anointed grace.
Nowadays, the practice has split into separate occasions for anointment and investiture (iwuye). This shift appears to have diluted the solemnity and simplicity originally intended for the anointment ceremony. The current practice is now that, those doing iwuye will now carry basin here and there in the church for money which is totally wrong according to the order of the church.
Evang. Demola has noted that the Celestial Church of old did not perform the iwuye as it is done today. Instead, everything was centered around the immediate anointment and subsequent thanksgiving, free from additional, perhaps unnecessary, ceremonial layers.
However, there remains a call from some quarters to return to the more straightforward practices of the past, emphasizing the purity and solemnity of the original anointment tradition.
