Dear Celestial Church of Christ, it is important that we stem the tide of mass illiteracy in our various parishes. We have become a Church that is big on show and not on substance.
The word ‘cathedral’ has administrative and architectural connotations. That your parish is 50 years old doesn’t make it a cathedral, nor does having a big warehouse make it a cathedral.
A Cathedral is the seat of a bishop or the administrative head of a diocese. A Cathedral has features of Greco-Roman Classical architectural themes that define it.
The building must be symbolic of a cathedral, and the head of the parish must be symbolic of a cathedral. It is not a competition like we’ve turned it into in the church. You cannot build a warehouse and put a sign on it labeling it a cathedral.
I went online and googled cathedral, but none of our parishes came up. Classic examples of cathedrals in Lagos are the Cathedral Church of Christ, Marina, and Holy Cross Cathedral. When you see the building, you will know it is symbolic.
When you want to label your parish as a cathedral, get architects and structural engineers to add the Dorian, Ionic, or Corinthian columns. Your facade must display mosaics and glassworks. You can adopt pointillism in your design of our revered founder.
I beseech you all, even though this will not gain any traction, your parish is not a CATHEDRAL.
Akhigbe Samson.
